It lies largely inside the barrier of Chequamegon Point and Long Island, with the Bad River Indian Reservation in Ashland, Wisconsin on its South end, Washburn, Wisconsin is on its North end. The name of the bay comes from the Ojibwe name Zhaagawaamikong meaning sand bar place or at the sand bar.
